Ashmason — a kiln wall in four walls

Ashmason

Lay a kiln wall course by course against a fixed purse. Straw brick is cheap and quick but it will not hold the heat. Kaolin holds anything and costs a fortune. The flame walks across the wall as you rise, and the bond you choose decides what the course below can carry.

  • Every cell has a live heat. The hottest cell in a course is the peak — an over-toleranced brick there cracks the face.
  • Running bond costs mortar but doubles the bearing under the course above. Stretcher bond is free and stacks its joints, which the firing test punishes.
  • Four walls, then a firing test on each that shows you the exact course and column that failed.

How a kiln wall fails

Reading the wall

Heat
The flame rises with every course, and the hot spot drifts sideways, so the peak cell moves as you build. The bricks glow with the heat that will pass through them.
Tolerance
Straw brick 500°, fire brick 1500°, kaolin 3000°. Add 90° for each bearing point the course below gives you.
Bearing
A course sitting on the kiln floor or on a running bond course gets double bearing (+180°). On a stretcher course it gets single (+90°). The two end cells of a running course are half-width closure bricks and carry nothing at all.
Bond
Stretcher is free. Running costs 2 coins a course. Two stretcher courses in a row stack their joints: −18 integrity, and the wall will not certify.
Failure
An over-toleranced brick outside the peak cell spalls (−9 integrity each). In the peak cell it breaches (−30). An unfilled cell is an open joint (−20) and the flame comes straight through.
Passing
A wall certifies with no open joints, no spalls, no breach, and integrity at or above the template's requirement.

The purse is fixed. If you run out, you may leave cells open and fire the wall as it stands — the report will tell you where it went.
