CAMPANOLOGY
A method is a dance written down. Bells hang on a wheel; each turn of the wheel is one stroke, and every stroke must bring the right bell to the hand. Lay out the changes while the tower is quiet, then pull the wheel by hand and ring the whole method. One bell out of turn and the round is gone.
The bells are still.
Nothing has moved. The wheel is where you left it.
Two hands and a wheel.
- SPACE / PULL
- Pull the wheel. Each notch of the wheel is one stroke. Keep it turning at the speed of the hand.
- A / CHECK
- Check the wheel and stop it. You need this after a muffled bell, and whenever the row starts to run away from you.
- 1 2 3
- While planning: a whole turn, a shifted turn, a half turn. Queue the turns that make the change, then ring it.
- W S
- Step through the changes of the method while planning.
- R M ESC
- Ring the method again / mute / pause.
A row of the method names the bells in the order they must come to the hand. A coincidence is a pair of strokes rung close together; the tie under the method shows you where. A muffled bell is rung and then the wheel is checked and rested before you pull on again.
Rung true.
Every stroke in its place.
