Chartwork

The coast is uncharted, the light is going, and a coaster is coming in on whatever you leave behind. Fix what you can, ink the sheet, then bring her in through the fog.

  1. Two bearings make a fix. Shoot a mark from one station, motor at least 130 m, shoot it again. A wide baseline and a right-angle crossing give you a tight ellipse; a shallow one gives you nothing.
  2. Sound with the lead. A sounding is good to a hand's breadth. It is the positions that lie — and only what you fixed is on the sheet at all.
  3. Then take her in. Fog to three cables, a tide that opens and shuts the bar, and every stretch you left blank is a stretch she will try.
