RECRUITMENT COMB
Watch the comb. A forager will come home and dance.
Nothing marked. The colony is idling.
A COLONY LOG · SEED 110
Hivewright
The bees cannot tell you where the nectar is. They can only dance it — an angle and a run so long it hurts. Read it, mark the comb, and get them through one bad week.
- Angle is the bearing. It starts wild and settles as the dance runs on.
- Run length is the distance. Under 0.30s is near, 0.46s is far.
- Vigour is the quality. A weak dance is a poor field.
How to read a dance
A returning forager drops onto the comb and runs a figure of eight. Two things are encoded in it, and a third you can only judge by eye.
- Angle
- The lemniscate leans to a bearing. Early on it wobbles by up to thirty degrees; it tightens as the dance runs. Wait for the needle to settle before you commit.
- Run length
- Each waggle run is timed. Under 0.30s is the near fields, past 0.46s is the far ones. The meter is exact — it costs you seconds, not judgement.
- Vigour
- A rich field gets a strong dance. Below half, the source is thin and the returns will be thin with it.
Mark the cell that matches. A true read pays a bonus on every trip that follows. A misread sends the whole wave to a field you have never seen.
