HOLLOW LOCK · FOUR DUTIES, ONE SHIFT
Lockkeeper
A canal lock is arithmetic with water in it. The chamber only changes level while a paddle is open; the gates only move safely when both sides are level. Bring each boat up to the pound, or down to the river, without going over the coping, without a slam, and before your shift runs out.
- W and S wind the upper and lower paddles. Hold them to keep water moving.
- Space works the lower gate, E the upper. Match the level first or the gates will slam.
- Both paddles at once run the gallery hot: quick, but it churns and it wears the gates.
A full shift runs 08:00. NO SHIFT ON RECORD YET
Shut off the water
Paused
The paddles are wound in and the clock is stopped. Nothing moves on a canal lock while you are not looking at it.
Hollow Lock, gate instructions
The keeper's rules
- W / S
- Hold to wind the upper (in) and lower (out) paddle. Water moves only while one is open, and it keeps moving for a moment after you shut it.
- Space
- Work the lower gate. Open it only when the chamber is level with the river, or a waiting boat comes in.
- E
- Work the upper gate. The inverted sill needs sealing water above 3.62 m or the gate will not budge.
- A / D
- Pick a culvert port, one to four, along the far wall.
- F
- Drive a plank into the selected culvert. A dry one costs four seconds; a wet one stops the leak.
- Escape
- Pause. M mutes. H opens this card.
Watch the coping. Let the chamber run above 4.40 m and the water goes over the stonework. Leave a gate open on a head and the balance beams take the strain. Both paddles at once churns the gallery and the gates feel it.
