SLATE QUARRY No. 4 · SIX MINUTES TO THE BELL
Quarryline
Cut slate, haul it down the winding road, and beat the weather to the splitter before dusk.
Read the bedding on the face and cut to that angle — grade comes from the seam and your cut, nowhere else. Three trucks, one splitter, one market. In fog the cut-off closes and every load takes the switchbacks the long way round all three terraces. Ship twelve dressed blocks before the bell, or the books close on you.

OPERATING CARD
Three verbs
- CUT · Enter
- One wire at a time. It takes 2.0–4.0s depending on the bench and the angle, costs 34 CR, and the grade comes from the seam's own vein plus how close your angle is to its bedding. Higher benches take longer and usually carry better stone.
- ANGLE · 1 / 2 / 3
- 56°, 72° or 88°. Cut to the bedding and you take the seam's vein plus 22. One step off costs almost nothing; the far angle takes 16 off. The first cut on a seam narrows the estimate for good.
- DISPATCH · E / R / F
- Loads a truck from the stockpile, 22 CR of diesel (more in weather), then the truck drives the road. It sells at the splitter on arrival and climbs back to the face for the next load.
The road
Clear and drizzly weather keeps the cut-off open — a short steep ramp on the east wall. Fog and landslides close it, and every truck takes the switchbacks instead: out west, round all three terraces, back along the headwall. The road is more than twice as long and the trucks crawl, so a load can take a minute. Watch the clock, not the truck.
The books
Today's order is twelve blocks of grade 50 or better on the weighbridge before the bell. Low grades still sell, but for less than the cut and fuel cost — bleed enough of those and the books close on you. Credits below zero end the run.
