WHAT THE SETTINGS DO NOW
Move a setting to read the machine.
THRESHER
A drum at the wrong speed either leaves the grain in the straw or pulverises it into chaff you cannot sieve out. Set the drum, the concave and the shoe, then open the feed and watch three lots go through the machine.
- The drum cracks the ear. Too slow and the grain comes out still in the straw; too fast and it is crushed and blown out the back.
- The feeder decides how evenly the crop presents itself. Feed it too fast and the drum works a wad at a time; let it pack and you must clear it.
- The shoe makes a different bargain. The sieve and the fan set a cut that has nothing to do with the drum.

The machine is holding.
The lot, the bins and the feed are where you left them.
Five lines, and only one bargain.
- W / S
- Raise or lower the chosen line. The board shows what the change did before you commit to it.
- A / D
- Choose the line: drum, concave, feed, sieve, fan.
- SPACE
- Open or shut the feed. The stack only goes down while the feed is open.
- C
- Knock the feeder packing out. Above a certain feed rate it will pack on its own.
- E
- Weigh what is in the bin right now: the weight, the purity and what the mill would make of it.
- R
- Close the lot and take it to market. Below the quota, that ends the day.
- ESC / M / H
- Pause, mute, this book.
Detachment comes off the drum, but the split into grain and chaff is made twice more: once by the walkers lifting the kernel out of the straw, and once by the sieve and the fan dividing what falls through. A drum that threshes beautifully can still put a bin of dirt on the mill.
