Paused
The month of January is unfinished. Nothing is spent and nothing spoils while you think.
how a rectory is run
The year, and what eats it
The corn
The barn holds 150 bushels. Corn above that lies in the open and rots. Corn keeps only so well: damp and vermin take a share of it every month, and what goes unsound is still taken out of the pile when you draw on it.
Feeding people
The poor are fed in money or out of the barn. Corn is cheaper; the barn is the only thing you have. The rector's own house eats every month, and a household kept meanly is talked about.
The tithe
Twice a year the tenants owe a tenth. Set a commutation price and a man whose price is under it pays money; over it, he delivers corn. How hard you press decides how much he gives and how he feels about it.
The account
Every month is posted into the roll. A rider fattens the balance, and the account then does not tally against the chest. At Michaelmas and Advent the dean reckons with you; in November a visitor cross-foots the year. He allows two shillings of error. He does not allow more.
