The proof
A letterpress composing game
Typesetter
A forme is a page held together by friction and hope. Pick the true sort for every letter, justify each line square to the measure, and bring the chase to the exact depth of the press bed — then pull a proof and read it letter by letter.
- 1–6 take that sort out of the case. A sort from the wrong size stands proud; a reversed nick prints upside down.
- Space sets a word space, H breaks a word, Enter closes the line.
- Three scrapped formes and the day is lost.
Arrow keys move along a returned forme. G for the looking glass. M to mute. Escape to pause.

The compositor's rule
Reading a sort
Type is cut backwards. A true sort is the right letter, the right body, nicked to the left. A sort from another size stands proud or falls short of the face and prints heavy or pale. A reversed nick prints the letter upside down. Press G for the looking glass and read them the right way round.
- 1–6 or tap a sort — take it out of the case.
- Space — a word space at the width on the gauge. − and + change it.
- H — break a word and set a hyphen. Two letters must stay on each side.
- C — set condensed sorts. They are narrower but cost you the allowance.
- Backspace — lift the last sort back into the case.
- Enter — close the line, then lock the chase, then drive a quoin, then pull the proof.
- Left and Right walk along a forme that has come back from the press.
